Leadership Leads
Client: B’nai Tikvah
Services: Leadership Leads Training Program
Usually, nonprofit boards are filled with wonderful people, each of whom are smart, committed, and willing to work. But when all of these smart, committed and willing people get together, sometimes they lack the structure to make the best use of all of their talents. This was the case with Congregation B’nai Tikvah, a small Jewish congregation about to grow much larger in a new building and expanding community.
After assisting B’e2’80’99nai Tikvah with their capital campaign, Bloom Metz Consulting was asked to conduct a leadership training workshop for the Board of Trustees. We met with the Rabbi, the President, and the chair of the planning committee to determine what was most needed and to prioritize the session. We came up with an outline that included: Why Does a Synagogue Need a Board of Trustees? What’s the Purpose of the Board? and What’s the Role of a Trustee? We followed these components with nuts and bolts discussions of How to Structure Committees, How to Plan and Conduct a Board Meeting, and How to Manage Follow-up.
In small organizations it’s sometimes hard for board members to make the switch from being a volunteer worker to being a policy maker, so we also included a session on Differentiating between Board Functions and Other Volunteer Functions – the joys and challenges of a small organization.
According to the President of the congregation, the first board meeting following the session went very well, was well-organized and had well-accepted guidelines. Immediately after the workshop, the chair of the planning committee said, “Sunday’s training was the right thing at exactly the right time. I would not hesitate to recommend Bloom Metz Consulting,” and one of the trustees present said, “Many of us have been aware that we needed to make some changes in the way we do business. You provided some valuable tools and now the ball is in our court.”
